There is no cure for generalized anxiety disorder.

I came across a website that flaunts a cure for GAD. There is no such thing as a cure for a chronic illness. Like diabetes, for example, generalized anxiety disorder is a disease that can be controlled using the proper medication and/or therapy.  Do not be seduced into thinking that you can go off your anti-anxiety medication just because you feel good. Anxiety disorder does not go away with time.

There is an annoying radio commercial that has a woman with a silky voice cooing about the symptoms of anxiety and saying that you should not have to take a pill to feel better. I think this is a great disservice to people with serious GAD. It will cause nothing but annoyance for someone like me who knows for sure that I need to be taking my medication. But what about the anxiety sufferers who have not yet found a psychiatrist to help them? Or the ones who are silly enough to think they should stop taking anti-anxiety medication that is working for them? Could you imagine hearing a radio commercial that said something like “Do you have diabetes? You don’t need to watch your diet or take insulin. Call us for a free trial of a diabetes cure that doesn’t involve any insulin or testing of blood levels. Free yourself from this daily grind.”

Unfortunately, mental illness is not viewed with the same respect or concern that other illnesses are.

Hi! Really interesting blog but I have to disagree that there is no “cure” for GAD. To be honest I share you irritation at the adverts that sell miracle cures to the needy but I do think there is such a thing as complete recovery, and it comes from within and can take hard wotrk and commitment. On my Blog http://www.anxiety2calm.com/blogger/blog.shtml I rant and rave quite a lot about this!! Drop by sometime
